State Assembly okays ban on advertising kids online

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The State Assembly passed a bill Thursday that would prohibit parents from advertising their children online to potential adopting parents.

The Assembly passed the bill unanimously, and now the measure moves on to the state Senate.

A current state law prohibits parents from advertising through mediums that include newspapers, radio and television but does not prohibit the web. The bill would also require parents who want to transfer their legal parental rights to someone else for more than a year to go through a court review.

Republican Rep. Joel Kleefisch, the author of the bill, says it is designed to ensure parents do not give their unwanted children to strangers without consent from the government.
