Madison Water Utility inundated with calls for frozen laterals

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Water Utility says its crews are working almost non-stop to restore water to homeowners with frozen laterals.

The utility says it's received more than 100 calls since Saturday because of problems with pipes that take water from city mains into homes. Normally, it receives fewer than five calls.

Maintenance of a service lateral is generally the responsibility of the homeowner, but Madison Water Utility offers one lifetime courtesy thaw per property. Crews have been going from home to home for the past several weeks to thaw frozen services. But since the frost line has dropped to six feet in some areas, the list of customers waiting for thaws continues to grow. Some people may have to wait two to five days before their service is restored.

The utility says it is bringing in additional equipment so it can thaw laterals as quickly as possible. It says anyone who needs their water immediately does have the option of calling a plumber to have their lines thawed, but it will be at their own expense.

If you're concerned about your lateral, Madison Water Utility recommends running your water for a few minutes, then checking its temperature by holding an ordinary thermometer in the stream. If the reading is less than 35 degrees, call the utility at 608-266-4651.

If you believe your lateral is frozen, call Madison Water Utility Dispatch at 608-266-4661.
