Verona school dist. growing, expecting expansion

Posted: Updated:

VERONA, Wisconsin (WKOW) – The Verona Area School District is growing, and the Superintendent expects that growth to continue well into the future.

Superintendent Dean Gorrell said the district has seen triple-digit increases in student enrollment each of the last three years.

He said the district is expecting another increase, of roughly 120 students, when the 2014/15 school year begins in the fall.

Gorrell said he's excited about the prospect of the district expanding, and added he would like to see a new elementary school built in the area south of Verona's downtown, near the Cathedral Point and Scenic Ridge housing developments, to accommodate more children.

"Our infrastructure needs to support all that growth," Gorrell said, adding infrastructure entails not just school buildings but also school programs and services.

Local realtors believe the strong school system, as well as an improving economy and continued expansion at Epic software company, located in Verona, can all be credited with drawing more people to the area.

Gorrell said plans for a new elementary school are still in the early stages. He said the district has not yet found a suitable piece of land, and a referendum would likely be needed for the school system to get the money necessary to build.
