Bayfield Co. (Press Release) - Law enforcement and rescue personnel responded to a 911 call Thursday morning reporting a person through the ice on Basswood Lake in the Town of Delta in Bayfield County.

The caller reported that while going fishing on Basswood, a lake he and his friend had fished previously, they were attempting to gain access to the lake from a different spot than normal because of the amount of snow on the ice.  While en route, his 68-year-old friend, Laverne Fletty, of Lake Hallie, who was ahead of him, broke through the ice.

The caller attempted to get Fletty out of the water, but was unable to do so.  After rescuers arrived, Fletty was retrieved from the icy water but had already passed away.

It is believed Fletty was crossing over a channel in the lake with an active current below.

Emergency services responding to the scene included Iron River Fire and Ambulance Service, Drummond Fire Department, divers from the Bayfield Fire Department and deputies from the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office.
