UW-Madison administrator nominated for federal post

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- A UW-Madison administrator is taking a job with the Obama administration.

President Barack Obama nominated Maria Cancian for assistant secretary for the Administration for Children and Families in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Cancian currently serves as an associate dean and professor in the College of Letters & Science at UW-Madison.

"Maria is an outstanding administrator and scholar - she will bring this experience and leadership to Washington, " UW Chancellor Rebecca Blank said in a statement issued Friday. "I want to thank her for everything she has done for our campus and congratulate her on the honor of being selected to serve the American people."

Cancian's nomination still needs to be approved by the U.S. Senate. Once that happens, she will assist the Administration for Children and Families in administering more than 60 programs with a budget of more than $49 billion to promote the economic and social well being of families, children, individuals and communities.
