Mom might face prison after child deaths

Posted: Updated:

ELKHORN (AP) -- A Walworth County woman who was sentenced to probation after her twin children drowned in a bathtub in 2011 might now face prison time.

A Janesville Gazette report says 28-year-old Melody N. Butt is accused of violating the terms of her probation.  The East Troy woman faces four misdemeanor charges including possession of marijuana.

The state Department of Corrections says it's reviewing the case to decide whether Butt should be sent to prison.

She was convicted of child neglect resulting in death, after she fell asleep while the 11-month old boy and girl were in the tub.  A 10-year prison sentence was stayed, meaning she'd only serve the time if she violated probation.

The voicemail for her previous defense attorney was full and wouldn't accept a message.
