Eau Claire surpasses average yearly snowfall amount

Eau Claire (WQOW) - With today's snowfall we are now past the average season accumulation.

Eau Claire has now received 51 inches of snow this winter, which is five more than the average 46 inches of snow. This winter's most notable feature has been the cold.  News 18 Chief Meteorologist nick Grunseth says today's snow is different when compared to past snowfalls this season because tomorrow's forecast is warm, and that can create driving hazards.

"When we get those sunny days and the winds from the south, our temperatures warm up. So, we are seeing some melting, the only problem with that is, that travelers need to keep in mind is that melting during the day time, and then a re-freeze during the overnight. So, that snow melts, that water running onto the roads and freezing at night can easily cause some slick spots," Nick Grunseth, WQOW Chief Meteorologist says.

Even though it feels like we have received a lot of snow this winter, Eau Claire is still about 38 inches below the record of 89.5 inches set in the winter of 1996-97.

But we are not out of the woods yet, Nick says as temps continue to warm up in March we can expect to see more snow.
