State Assembly passes bill that could help drug addicts get treatment

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- State Assembly has approved a bill proposal that would create a formal system of short-term sanctions for convicts who violate probation.

The bill would require the Department of Corrections to consider a number of factors when imposing sanctions. The factors include the level of intensity needed, imposing quick consequences and ensuring minimal impact on an offender's job and family.

The bill's author, Representative John Nygren, introduced the proposal to combat heroin abuse. He hopes that the bill will help addicts get treatment quicker.

The Assembly passed the bill Thursday, and now will move on to the state Senate.
