Storm causes increase in injuries from snowblowers

Eau Claire (WQOW) -  Heavy, wet snow outside raises concerns on the road but also right on your own driveway.

Three people have been treated at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire for minor snowblower injuries.

Doctors say these kinds of injuries happen after a snow like last night which can clog the machine.

All three injuries were caused when people put their hands in the snowblower

"These are not the type of injuries where we can do beautiful microsurgery, Hollywood-type surgery and sew the fingers on," said Hand Surgeon Nathan Hoekzema. "Most of the time you're talking permanent amputation."

Doctors say never stick your hand in a snowblower even if it's off. If snow is clogging your snowblower, shut it off and use a stick or broom handle to clear out the clog.
