Awning collapses at mobile home; Altoona man safe

Altoona (WQOW) - Thursday's snow fall kept people busy, shoveling not only sidewalks but also roofs. For one Altoona man, that daunting task quickly turned dangerous.

Cody Schwoch, from Altoona, said, "I was actually getting ready to take our snow rake and shovel the top of the roof because our house was making noises."

Schwoch was shoveling from the ground when a metal bar that hinged the porch roof to the mobile home gave out and collapsed. Schwoch said, "All I heard was it came crashing down. It hit me in the back of the head and pinned me against the awning and the steps."

Police and fire crews responded to Pansy Lane shortly after midnight. Jesse James, the chief of police and fire chief of Altoona said, "The awning had collapsed due to the heavy and wet snow, and he was just outside and the awning collapsed down onto his body, pinning his leg underneath him."

Schwoch said, "When it first happened, I would say it felt like it was 100, 200 pounds. But 10 minutes into it, my leg just, I couldn't feel my leg, from here up."

It took crews nearly 30 minutes to get Schwoch free. Chief James said, "We deployed airbags to the front of the awning in hopes it would create enough pressure to raise it and safely remove the subject from underneath the awning."

Schwoch returned home from the hospital just a few hours after the accident. He said, "They said that I don't have any broken bones, so I'm lucky there."

Schwoch said he sustained a few cuts to his left leg.
