Recap of storm's impact on the roads

Western WI (WQOW) - It's been a busy 24 hours for area state troopers handling accidents along Interstate 94.

From Thursday afternoon until late Friday afternoon, troopers dealt with 70 slide-ins, and 32 crashes.  Amazingly, no one had to go to the hospital.

The state patrol says the intensity of the storm Thursday night forced drivers to slow down, so the number of incidents was less than might be expected for such bad conditions.

But Friday, as the roads started to get better, drivers picked up speed, and ended up having more crashes, with much more property damage as they went from good stretches of road to bad stretches.

As of late Friday afternoon, the state patrol said the interstate west of Eau Claire continues to be a challenge.

It was slow going on I-94 in Eau Claire Friday morning.  Traffic was backed up for a mile in the westbound lanes as semis inched up an icy incline on the interstate.

The state patrol says some jackknifed or slid off the road, creating more backups. A tow truck had to tow four semis up the icy hill.  No injuries were reported. The backup lasted for a couple hours.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department says it responded to a total of 113 crashes between Thursday and Friday. And out of all of those, no one was injured.
