Xcel Energy crews busy fixing power lines after winter storm

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Crews from Xcel Energy were busy overnight and into early Friday morning working on restoring power to thousands of customers in our area.

"The heavy snow and the winds are making it really difficult on our linemen," said Liz Wolf Green of Xcel Energy.

Another winter storm means another restoration effort for Xcel energy.

"With that heavy, wet snow, freezing conditions, the wind; that snaps the tree branches into the lines, and that's what's causing a lot of the outages. We had a lot of downed power lines, which resulted in about 60,000 customers in Wisconsin and Minnesota experiencing power outages," said Wolf Green.

A total of 180 workers were tackling issues statewide.

One crew was busy setting power lines straight on Golf Road Friday afternoon as work wound down. If you do happen to drive by, Xcel says to do so carefully.

"It's really important to steer clear of the work that they're doing for your own safety, and the safety of our crews," Wolf Green said.

If you see a downed line, call 1-800-895-1999 to report it. Eau Claire Energy Cooperative said as of noon, it has more than 1,500 customers without power across its service area. The largest number of outages happened in the Drammen and Mondovi areas.
