Eau Claire Marathon names race beneficiaries for 2014

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The Eau Claire Marathon has just announced three organizations that will be receiving donations from this year's race: Girls On The Run, Big Brothers Big Sisters' Mentors in Motion program and the Jeanne Richie Longfellow Elementary Wellness Program.

Marathon organizers sent out this release Monday morning:

Girls on the Run is a wellness-focused after-school program for girls in grades 3-5. For 8 years they have made a positive impact on schools, children, and families in the Chippewa Valley. They service schools in Eau Claire, Altoona, Fall Creek, Osseo, and Fairchild. There is a financial burden for families to buy quality running shoes for their kids. We are excited to partner with GIRLS ON THE RUN to start a program that will provide vouchers to purchase shoes for girls whose families have financial constraints. Good running shoes can improve performance, prevent injury, and be used outside of the program.

"We are excited for all the girls we can now help," said Kim Gillett from Girls on the Run.

Emi Uelmen, assistant Marathon Director, has a 4th grader of her own who loves to run. "Some of my favorite races, I have run with my daughter," said Uelmen. "I hope that partnering with the Girls on The Run, more moms and daughters will be able to experience the fun we have running together!"

Mentors in Motion was just launched in January of this year. It was specifically created and launched to help combat childhood obesity making mentoring relationships that focus on being active and having a healthy lifestyle. Mentors in Motion gets children active by pairing them with adults who enjoy being active. The matches in the program are expected to spend at least 3 outings a month doing something active together.

"Mentors in Motion is all about healthy, active lifestyles. The reason we've taken on this event is because we know that by encouraging people to challenge themselves with one of our runs, that they will experience something that potentially could change their lives! We want these kids to 'lace ‘em up' and just see what happens," said Marathon director Pat Toutant.

Longfellow's Wellness Team is pleased to announce the creation of the Jeanne Richie Memorial Puddle Jump Endowment. This endowment will allow Longfellow Elementary the ability to help support student wellness needs in the future.

Holly Larson, from Longfellow school said, "The E.C. Marathon has made our kids super happy," said Holly Larson, of Longfellow Elementary. "Now you are making me cry, thank you very, very much."

"Jeanne Richie epitomized hope, encouragement and kindness," said Race director Pat Toutant. "It is our desire to support a program that mirrors Jeanne's wonderful attitude!"

Additionally, Eau Claire Marathon organizers are reminding everyone that there are five days left until the next price increase.  Click here to register today!
