MAZOMANIE (WKOW) -- Dane County officials say the woman who died in her Mazomanie home was murdered.

Sheriff Dave Mahoney held a news conference Tuesday afternoon, declaring Cheryl L. Gilberg's a homicide. Gilberg was found Sunday night by a family member. An autopsy shows the 43-year-old woman was shot in the head sometime Sunday.

Mahoney says no one is in custody related to the homicide and no one has been charged at this time. Investigators continue following up on leads coming in and working to bring the case to a close.

Authorities tell 27 News a deputy was called to the home on Scott Street earlier this month, when Gilberg filed a report regarding a domestic violence incident in December. According to Dane County court records, she recently filed a preliminary restraining order against a man, but it was not connected with that December incident. According to court records, he was taken into custody on an unrelated probation hold on Monday.

Sheriff Mahoney says everyone who has been interviewed is cooperating in the investigation and said there are no suspects he could identify at this time.

"There's nothing that points at this point definitively that this is an act of domestic violence as we're investigating a homicide now," says Mahoney. "This was not a random act, we don't believe that it was a random act, and we're working very diligently to bring it to closure."

Mahoney says Gilberg lived alone at the time of her death but he believes she was married.
