UPDATE: Stepbrother of abused girl sentenced to 5 years in prison

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE (WKOW) --- A judge sentenced Joshua Drabek Wednesday to 5 years in prison for sex crimes against his step sister and another victim.

The judge sentenced the 20-year-old Drabek to three years for the victimization of his stepsister, and two years for another case of a 15-year-old girl in December 2012.

Drabek's mother and stepfather are already serving five year prison sentences, after starving Drabek's sibling, and confining her to a Madison basement for years.

"I feel like I should have done something," Drabek told Dane County Judge Julie Genovese. "I failed her."

Prosecutors asked the judge for 30 years in prison for Drabek's crimes, noting his pattern of disregard for others.

But Genovese said Drabek was also a victim of the bizarre, dysfunctional home, and was only a teen himself, when he preyed on his younger stepsister.

"She was the victim of profound and sustained neglect," Genovese said. "You were the victim of neglect in a different way."

As the result of Drabek's sexual misdeeds as a teen, his parents devised an alarmed basement system, with motion sensors and cameras, to keep Drabek's stepsister separate from him. Genovese said Drabek's parents allowed Drabek to do what he wanted.

The crimes of Drabek and his parents were uncovered, when the girl ran away in February 2012, and was discovered in scant clothing despite cold, winter weather, and weighing sixty eight pounds as a fifteen year old.

During a more than thirty minute statement, Drabek refused to acknowledge his sex crimes against his stepsister, but said she had suffered.

"She is a victim. What my parents did, the life she lived, is wrong."

MADISON (WKOW) -- Today marks the final chapter in the case of a Madison girl who was abused by her family for years, starved and locked in a basement.

The girl was 15 when she escaped the home two years ago, weighing only 68 pounds. Her father, Chad Chritton and stepmother, Melinda Drabek-Chritton are serving five years in prison each for child abuse. Her stepbrother, Joshua Drabek will be sentenced Wednesday morning for sexually assaulting and abusing her.

Drabek was found guilty by a Dane County jury last week. During his trial, the girl told the court he tried to sexually assault her when she was 9 and he was 13, and then did force a sex act on her when she was 13.

Drabek faces up to 146 years in prison for his crimes, which include a sexual assault conviction for another 15-year-old girl in a separate case. Drabek pleaded guilty in that case in July.
