Wisconsin Democrats push universal background checks for all gun sales

Eau Claire (WQOW) - State democrats backed up a proposal for universal background checks for all gun sales today.

More than 16-thousand people signed on to support senate and assembly versions of legislation.

One lawmaker said today that without universal background checks the state's current laws preventing felons from possessing guns are meaningless.

Current law requires background checks for guns bought from licensed dealers. This proposal would extend those checks to guns bought online and also at gun shows.

Governor Walker visited Chippewa Falls Thursday, where we asked him about his thoughts on the legislation.

"We already have some of the most aggressive background checks in the country," Walker said. "We prohibit felons from purchasing firearms, we prohibit those that have been committed involuntarily for mental issues from purchasing firearms and that's worked and so that's some thing that is intact and has worked very well."
