Madison movie expert makes Oscar picks on Wake Up Wisconsin

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Movie buffs are weighing in on their Oscar picks, including Rob Thomas with The Cap Times and 77 Square.

He says his pick for Best Picture this year is "12 Years a Slave." But he went back and forth for months between that film and "Gravity." Thomas says the competition will be tough this year, and he wouldn't be surprised if "American Hustle" or "The Wolf of Wall Street" won instead.

As for Best Actress, Thomas thinks Cate Blanchett will take it this year for "Blue Jasmine." He says Amy Adams ("American Hustle") might be the dark horse and no Academy Award nominee list would be complete without Meryl Streep ("August: Osage County"). As he puts it, "They just put her name in ink on the nominee list and then figure out which movie she's in later."

Thomas thinks Matthew McConaughey will win Best Actor for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club." He jokes, it usually "goes to the actor who lost the most weight." Thomas says Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Wolf of Wall Street") and Bruce Dern ("Nebraska") are ones to watch too.
