Eau Claire senior candidate for U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Being any kind of scholar is noteworthy but few have the presidential seal. For one Eau Claire senior, he may be able to have both.

17-year-old J.P Nelson, from Memorial High School, is one of 3,000 candidates for the 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. He was selected from a pool of nearly three and a half million students.

Besides being in excellent academic standing, J.P. has been to state three times with the cross country team, plays in the school's jazz band and got a perfect score on his ACT's. J.P. finds out if he is one of the scholars in May.

"It's really just an incredible honor because there were only 3,000 people in the entire nation chosen for this and that's pretty amazing. So, just to be nominated is a massive honor," J.P Nelson says.

As for the future, J.P. is still debating which college to go to: it's between the University of Minnesota and Arizona State University, unless he gets accepted to Stanford.
