Former Mike's Smokehouse employees waiting for final paychecks

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Former employees of an Eau Claire restaurant gathered Friday, hoping to receive their paychecks after the business closed this week.

Former Mike's Smokehouse workers say they typically received their normal paychecks at the restaurant Friday mornings. Friday was payday, but neither the owner nor the checks showed up. Workers found out about the restaurant closing when they were called Monday morning. Employees say they reached out to the department of labor yesterday. They were told the owners would have six days to pay or be in violation of the law.

"People are struggling, that's for sure, and they need it. Rents are due for most of the employees. We file for unemployment, some of the employees will have to get food share. And that's really sad to see. People live paycheck to paycheck and most can't afford to go very long without any income," said Martha Hamblin, former Mike's Smokehouse employee.

We did speak to the owner of Mike's Smokehouse Friday asking if or when employees would be paid. All he would say is "no comment" and that he has hired a lawyer.  Some employees told us they had been having issues with bounced paychecks from Mike's Smokehouse in the past few months.
