Red Cross needs blood donations after harsh winter weather

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The American Red Cross is looking for more help after the bitterly cold weather we've seen this winter.

Brian Gomez, with the American Red Cross, said nearly 320 Red Cross blood drives were canceled in 25 states, resulting in a shortfall of more than 9,300 blood and platelet donations. In Wisconsin, 14 blood drives were canceled, resulting in 566 uncollected blood and platelet donations.

Gomez said the Red Cross must collect about 15,000 pints of blood every day for patients at approximately 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.

Now, the Red Cross is encouraging all eligible donors to make an appointment to give blood or platelets in the days ahead. Gomez said all blood types are needed to ensure a sufficient supply is available for patients, but there is an urgent need for blood types O positive, O negative, A negative and B negative.

To give blood, someone must be at least 16 years of age with a parent's signed permission slip, meet weight and height requirements and be in general good health.

If you would like to schedule an appointment to donate, click here or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
