Eau Claire (WQOW) -- For the fifth-straight season, the Eau Claire Memorial boys hockey team has punched their ticket to state.
The Old Abes blanked Regis/McDonell 5-0 in the sectional final on Saturday. Jake Bresser led the way with four goals in the victory. The team says they are ready to defend their state title.
"It just keeps getting sweeter and sweeter, all four years going down to Madison. It's something special to be proud of for this program and organization and we're going to have fun next week," says senior forward Jacob Bresser.
"We have a group of kids, 14 of them were on our state championship team last year," says head coach Mike Schwengler. "I said at the start of the year, the biggest regret I have as a coach was in 2009, we fell short of having the opportunity to defend. Not many teams can do that. We've taken everybody's best shot in the state this year and we're able to go back. Now we have to start all over."
The Old Abes will get a good test right out of the gate, facing top-ranked Green Bay Notre Dame. The state quarterfinal matchup will begin around 2:15 p.m. on Thursday.
