Eau Claire School District looking to change healthcare eligibility

Eau Claire (WQOW) -  The Eau Claire School district is moving forward with a plan that would change healthcare coverage for part-time employees.

Right now anyone working at least 20 hours a week is eligible for the district's health insurance plan on a pro-rated basis.

The affordable care act has the district looking to change that.  The school board is considering coverage only for those who work at least 30 hours a week.

That would save the district money, but may also open the door for those who work fewer hours to be eligible for subsidies.

"If an individual is covered through your employer, then they can't receive a subsidy if you offer the insurance from anyone between 20 and 30 hours, there could be potentially better options in the market place," said Deb Svihovec, a benefits consultant for Associated Bank.

The school board will vote on whether to make the shift at its next meeting.
