The Palace Theater in Spooner exceeds Kickstarter goal

Spooner, Wis. (WQOW) - From the brink of locking its doors, to expensive upgrades: one area theater asked for help and they got it. We first told you about a Kickstarter campaign for the Palace Theater in Spooner in January.

The 74-year-old theater needed to upgrade from 35 millimeter film, which is being phased out by film companies, to digital. The cost of converting one of the theater's two screens was $60,000, which is what they set their goal at.

Last night, the goal was met and has since been exceeded. We spoke with the theater manager today and she says the generosity of everyone involved is what prompted her to post an emotional thank you online.

"Thank you everyone so much for donating. I really appreciate all the help and support and affection and appreciation I've received from everybody. This dream wouldn't be possible without you guys," Palace Theater JoEllen Weathers says.

And even more good news: JoEllen was able to find two slightly-used digital projectors for the cost of one new one. That means both screens can be updated. The switch is scheduled for late spring or early summer.

Watch the video above to see the full thank you from the theater's manager.
