Sign up begins for 3rd annual Once Upon a Prom

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Spring is just around the corner and for high school students that means one thing: prom. In Eau Claire, that means it's time for another tradition: Once Upon a Prom.

In its third year, Once Upon a Prom allows girls to select a dress, shoes and jewelry for free. In exchange, the girls must complete six hours of volunteer work in the community.  Today at North High School, students signed up to take part.  With the rite of passage costing an average of $300, many are unable to attend because of financial issues.

"Our hope is that every girl that wants to attend their prom is able to. So, we want to get our word out there so that there's nobody at the end of the day that says I didn't go to my prom because I couldn't afford to go. That's our ultimate goal," Jennifer Rooney of Once Upon a Prom says.

The event is April 12 – 13 at The Salon Professional Academy on mall drive. People wishing to participate can sign up online for a time slot. Or, if you wish to donate a gown, donation information can be found here.
