Dozens line up for UW-Eau Claire Surplus Store

Eau Claire (WQOW) - It's a little-known sale, yet people who are in the know line up hours in advance.

We're not talking about Black Friday or a sale on the newest I-phone. It's a sale at a surplus store in Eau Claire.

"We get stuff from all of the shops, all of the departments on campus. They become obsolete to them," Erik Simonsen of UW-Eau Claire's Surplus Store says.

Calculators, chairs and computers, oh my, the Surplus Store at UW-Eau Claire has it all.

"We have quite a bit of office furniture. We're lucky enough to get computer hardware and programs that come up. We have several items you wouldn't expect up here," Simonsen says.

Opened in 2012, the store sells items the university doesn't use anymore, at a much discounted price.

"Where that computer would have been a $400 computer new, it's probably about $35," Simonsen says.

For the shoppers, the bargains are so good, they're willing to wait for them.

"I would say the towers, they're $35. They don't come completely ready to go but it is still a good deal," Mike Decker, a shopper from Eau Claire says.

"We open the doors at 3'o'clock and people have been known to line up as early as noon. Oh, they love the I-Macs. As soon as we get an I-Mac, they line up and try to be the first one in and get first choice on that," Simonsen says.

"He said it's open at 3 o clock on Thursday; if you want to get your dad a monitor, stop by. He said get there early because there's a line," Julia Setwyn, a shopper from Eau Claire says.

And you better be quick, the sale only comes once in a 4.0, which is every two weeks.

The store's mission is to keep as much waste out of landfills as possible. The store is only open to the public from three to six p.m. every other Thursday. A full list of dates is available online, as well as information on how to sign up for their mailing list.
