Eau Claire City Council hears report on quiet train crossings

Eau Claire (WQOW) - TheEau Claire City Council heard what it would take to silence the trains in Eau Claire.

Thecity hired a consulting firm to study train crossings and what it would take tocreate quiet zones in the city.

Thosezones restrict when trains can blow their horns, but safety measures would beneeded first.

Forexample:  gates, flashing lights, signageand vertical medians would have to be added at crossings along Galloway and Putnamstreets.

Anotherpotential quiet zone covers several crossings from Centre to Hogarth.  The estimated price tag would be $3.3 million.

"Ihaven't had a decent night's sleep in four years," said Donald Hendricks wholives near one of the crossings. "I've had my house re-sided, I put newthermal-pained and double-pained windows in it, insulation, and that soundstill reverberates right through the glass."

The city says no actionis planned to create quiet zones right now.
