Milwaukee woman charged in death of her child

Posted: Updated:
MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A Milwaukee mother has been charged with causing the death of her 14-month-old son last weekend.

Our affiliate in Milwaukee, WISN, reports 36-year-old Nora Zylstra has been charged with first degree intentional homicide in the death of little Leo Fisher.

Sunday afternoon, police were called for a welfare check at a home on Eden Court.  Leo's father had fought with Zylstra and was concerned for their well being.

Upon arrival, police found the deceased boy and Zylstra semi-conscious, with a bottle of pills nearby.  Investigators say Zylstra stated the little boy's father had moved out and she was served March 2nd with custody papers.  The father had come to the home Saturday to pack up some of his belongings.

Zylstra stated she "did not want Leonidas to deal with the pain and suffering," so she had Googled "ways to die".  She had taken several Percocet pills Saturday and then suffocated her son using a blanket and pillow.  Zylstra then dressed him in his Christmas outfit and attempted to commit suicide.

If she's convicted, Zylstra faces life in prison.
