Road construction season kicks off in Eau Claire

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Spring is around the corner which means only one thing in Wisconsin: road construction. The orange traffic cones have gone up and the crews are getting ready to start, as early as next week.

In Eau Claire, the biggest project is actually the second part of one of last year's projects. Interstate 94 between Highways 37 and 93 will be completely re-done, as well as the ramps connecting Highways 37 and 94.

"We're redoing the concrete, in its entirety. The interstate was built in the late 1950's so we've gotten a good life out of the pavement that we have but there comes a time when you have to replace it so you reconstruct the whole roadway," Don Gutowski, WI-DOT Northwest Region Director says.

Construction begins on Monday and the 37 ramps are going to be closed from then until the Friday before Memorial Day weekend.

Other major projects scheduled for this year include a new eastbound bridge over the Red Cedar River in Dunn County and new pavement on Highway 93 in Independence. Traffic will be detoured in that area.
