Altoona's housing growth means more services are likely needed

Altoona (WQOW) - Acity known for its development projects in recent years could be adding onemore. Last night, the Altoona Plan Commission approved rezoning property for ahousing development. Altoona'smayor spoke to us Tuesday about the project and what it means for the city.

"We're talkinggenerally about 40 acres here," said Jack Blackburn, City of AltoonaMayor.

An area west of Highway53 in Altoonamay soon be home to more homes.

"It's myunderstanding that this is in the neighborhood of $13 million dollars when it'sfinished," Blackburn said.

A developer is hoping toturn this snow-covered path into the main road through a new neighborhoodfilled with homes. Called Club View Estates, it would include space for 60 twinhomes and 22 single family homes. If approved, it would join other housingdevelopments given the green light in recent years.

"The River Prairie Developmentand that is pretty well built out at this point. Three years back there was anew street that went in called River's Edge, and it's along the Eau Claire River. And virtually all of those homesites are constructed at this point," said Blackburn.

All of that interest isno surprise to Altoona'smayor.

"What is driving itis the fact that Altoonahas bare land that has never been developed before. It isn't like we have totear something down.  It's wooded, it'sbeautiful," explained Blackburn.

In order to keep up withthe new housing options, Altoona'smayor said the city will likely need to increase what it provides itsresidents.

"Certainly the firedepartment and the public works department is going to be increasing.Snow plowing has been a big issue this year. We're having more streets to plowevery year. So that will be part of it," Blackburnsaid.

And while they end up ascity residents…

"Mostof the people that are in these new areas of construction are not coming from Altoona. They're comingfrom outside the city, and so we've got the welcome mat out and we love to seewhat's happening here," Blackburn added.

Altoona's city council could give the finalgo-ahead for the club view estates project at its meeting on Thursday.
