BadgerCare coverage ends for thousands, deadline to apply through Obamacare website nears

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Last year governorwalker rejected federal funding to fill holes in Wisconsin's BadgerCare program.  That decision affected health insurancecoverage for thousands of people statewide.

Citizen Action of Wisconsinsaid 84,000 people will be forced off of the free BadgerCare program andinstead must purchase private health insurance through the Obamacarewebsite.  The group estimates around 2,700people in Eau Claire,Chippewa and Dunn counties will be affected and an event on Thursday focused ona deadline that's quickly approaching.

Citizen Action said inorder to be fully covered on April 1st.  Those being kicked off of BadgerCare mustapply for new health insurance by Saturday, March 15 or will not have coveragefor the month of April.

Kevin Kane, the leadorganizer of the Citizen Action of Wisconsin, said, "This didn't needto happen. We did not need to put hundreds of thousands of people in extracosts on low-income people when the should have and still could take thefederal funds. If people are forced to pay a lot more for health insurance, andshouldn't have had to, a lot of them aren't gong to be able to, and a lot ofthem are going to end up here, in emergency rooms, and in free clinics, when wewhen we could have covered them."

Nationwide, underObamacare, all uninsured people have until March 31st to sign up, orthey will have to go without coverage for the rest of the year and face a finefrom the federal government.
