Polk Co. (News Release) - On March 21, 2014 at 10:19 a.m., the Polk County Sheriff's Office was notified of a motor vehicle crash involving a passenger car and a commercial motor vehicle on STH 87 approximately ¼ mile north of 250th Avenue in Sterling.  Polk County deputies, along with local first responder and emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene.

Deputies investigating the crash found that a 1999 Peterbilt semi-tractor pulling a loaded hopper-style trailer owned by Lucky Oats Farm of Grantsburg, WI was traveling southbound on STH 87 when a northbound 2002 Chrysler Pacifica lost control on snow covered roads and slid into the southbound traffic lane into the path of the semi.  The collision resulted in both vehicles coming to rest in the east ditch of STH 87.

The driver of the semi, Brian Louis, 44, of Grantsburg, was not injured in the crash.  The driver and lone occupant of the Chrysler Pacifica; a rural Grantsburg woman, was pronounced deceased at the scene by a deputy Polk County Medical Examiner.  The name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notification of family members.

Weather and road conditions are believed to be the primary factors in this crash.  This crash remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Polk County Medical Examiners Office, with assistance from the WI State Patrol, Motor Carrier Enforcement Unit, Northland Ambulance Service, and the Cushing Fire Department.

This is the 4th traffic fatality in Polk County for 2014.
