Maple Syrup Fest celebrates spring

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Visitors to the Aldo Leopold Nature Center got a sweet taste of spring on Sunday during Maple Syrup Fest.

Multiple stations were set up throughout the nature center that explained the history and science behind making maple syrup. Guests could taste sap right from one of the center's many maple trees or sample the finished product. Sierra Munoz, director of marketing and community engagement at the nature center, says the goal of Maple Syrup Fest is to help people better understand and engage with nature.

"One of the things we're always trying to do at the nature center is connect people, families, and students to nature," says Munoz. "What better way to connect people to nature than to talk to them about something sweet and wonderful that comes out of the trees that grow here?"

Munoz says the long, harsh winter has not been ideal for maple syrup production but the recent warmer weather is helping to jump start the process.

"This year has been very so-so," says Munoz. "It was a very harsh winter, but now that we have these days above freezing and the nights are still freezing, that's the perfect time for the sap to start flowing."

Visitors to Sunday's festival could also explore the trails and climate exhibits at the nature center.
