UPDATE: Boy in intensive care after hit and run

Buffalo County (WQOW) - The boy who was hit by a semi this week in Nelson is doing well, all things considered, but has a long recovery ahead of him.

The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office says 9-year-old Corie Maynard was hit by the semi when he ran into the street.  His mother says her son suffered a broken leg, pelvic bone, and arm.  Part of his jawbone was shattered and he has minor brain bruising as well.  Thursday, doctors removed his ventilator and he's breathing on his own.

Corie remains in the pediatric intensive care unit at a Twin Cities hospital.  His mother says he will be there for at least another two to three weeks, and possibly longer, and will then have to undergo a lot of physical therapy.

Corie is a 3rd grader at Alma Elementary School.  His mom says he is receiving a lot of well-wishes from fellow students.  The sheriff's office says the search continues for the driver of the semi that hit him.

Buffalo County (Press Release) - On Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at approximately 4:10 p.m., the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department received a report of a child that had been struck by a semi on Highway 25/35 at the intersection of Jefferson St. in the Village of Nelson. On arrival, deputies found that the striking vehicle had continued southbound through Nelson after the accident, according to a witness. The victim was a nine-year-old male, who sustained life-threatening injuries. The child was transported by air ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN.

The limited description of the striking vehicle was described as having a white semi trailer with pictures on the side. The young witness was not able to tell deputies what the "pictures" were. There was no other description that could be provided by the witness. It's unknown if the semi continued in the direction of Wabasha or if it turned to go southbound on Highway 35 in the direction of Alma.

The child was crossing the highway with one other child when the accident occurred. The children had stopped to yield for traffic, but the victim ran out onto the highway and was struck by the rear portion of the semi trailer. The identity of the child is not being released at this time.

The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department is asking for assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the accident or could provide information regarding the accident. They are asked to call the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department at 608-685-4433.

The accident is being investigated by the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol. Also assisting at the scene was the Alma Ambulance and Nelson Fire Department.
