UPDATE: Altoona police now say dog found with gunshot wounds was actually hit by car

Altoona (WQOW) - UPDATE: Altoona police now say that a dog thought to have been shot was actually hit by a car.

Altoona police say around 9 p.m. Tuesday night, a resident found a Beagle loose in the 3000 block of Spooner Avenue.  It was initially reported by Altoona police that the dog had been found with two gunshot wounds.

Police now say based on the day's investigation, it appears the dog was actually hit by a car on Spooner Avenue.  Investigators say a person who had seen a report on local media about the dog being shot, came forward and admitted hitting a Beagle Tuesday night with their car. That person told police they then knocked on several doors to try to find the owner.

Investigators say some of the dog's injuries are unexplainable, but that no bullets were found and no one has reported hearing or seeing any gunshots at the time of the incident.

The dog received medical attention at the Oakwood Hills Animal Hospital and late Wednesday afternoon, was reunited with its owner and is said to be doing very well.

Altoona police want to assure residents that there is no danger to the public.
