Plans for sports complex at local park move forward

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Plans for a baseball and softball complex on Eau Claire's northwest side got a boost Tuesday.

The Chippewa Valley Homebuilders Association has decided to make Jeffers Park one of its community projects this year. The group has agreed to volunteer the labor to build the park pavilion and restroom building.

The proposed park along Jeffers Road would have five fields for baseball and softball, along with a playground and trails. Fundraising is still underway. The hope is to open it next spring.

Eau Claire (Press Release) - The Jeffers Park Development Project is significantly closer to fulfilling its mission thanks to the Chippewa Valley Homebuilders Association, which accepted it as one of their annual community construction projects in 2014. The Project's goal is to plan and construct a five field baseball and softball complex with other public park amenities, such as a playground, pavilion, and trails.

While the city of Eau Claire owns the land, it's collaborating with the Eau Claire National Little League and Eau Claire Fastpitch to make Jeffers Park a reality. These two youth sports leagues are working to raise at least $300,000 for the complex, which will allow the young athletes to have improved league and tournament opportunities and reduce the need for them to compete with UWEC and high school students for limited ballpark facilities.

Led by Tim Olson of Royal Construction, the Chippewa Valley Homebuilders Association will volunteer the contractor labor to build the new Jeffers Park pavilion and restroom building.

"It is a generous and important lead gift toward the project and one that I am confident will inspire other donors to allow the project to move forward this year and allow us to open a new Jeffers Park to the public next year," said Eau Claire Fastpitch President Stephen C. Nick.

Advocates of the Jeffers Park Development Project are currently in discussions with other key contractors and expect to soon make other announcements regarding important in-kind contributions. They will also be sending out fundraising mailers and meeting with prospective donors to the project. At an upcoming meeting with the City Parks and Recreation Department, they plan to establish a construction schedule that will allow the park to open to play by the spring of 2015.
