MURRYSVILLE, Pa. (WKOW) -- A 16-year-old boy accused of stabbing and slashing 22 people at Murrysville, PA high school has been charged as an adult.

CNN reports an anonymous source close to the investigation says he has been charged with attempted homicide.

Authorities haven't identified the boy. But he appeared before Magisterial District Judge Charles Conway on Wednesday afternoon in Export, about 5 miles from the Murrysville high school.

Witnesses say the boy tackled a freshman and stabbed him in the belly on Wednesday morning and then got up and ran wildly down a hall, slashing other students. They say he had a blank expression on his face before an assistant principal tackled him.

A Westmoreland County public safety spokesman says at least 21 students were stabbed or slashed and a security guard was stabbed. He says two other students suffered other injuries during the incident. At least five of the student victims were admitted to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors say all are expected to recover.
