UPDATE: DNR finds no asbestos in downtown Eau Claire building

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A downtown Eau Claire building that was inspected for cancer-causing asbestos has been cleared by the DNR.

The owner of the former Kline's Department Store building on S. Barstow Street was accused of allowing people to start removing interior fixtures without having the building checked for asbestos. She was forced to hire her own inspector to check for the material and the DNR also did testing.

Tuesday, the DNR informed her that it did not find any asbestos and she was cleared to move ahead with removing items. The DNR told WQOW News 18 that because no threat was found, she is unlikely to face any penalties for initially failing to do the inspection.

The building is one of those in line to be razed for the proposed Confluence Project.
