UW-Milwaukee basketball banned from postseason

Posted: Updated:
MILWAUKEE (WKOW) - The UW-Milwaukee basketball team will not be making a return trip to the NCAA Tournament next season. The program has been placed on a one-year postseason ban by the NCAA for a low Academic Performance Rate score.

Schools need an APR score of 930 to be eligible for the postseason. The current four-year cycle score for the Panthers is 908. A team loses points if a player leaves the school in poor academic standing or if a player is academically ineligible.

UW-Milwaukee athletic director Amanda Braun said in a statement the school has taken various steps to improve the academic standing of the student-athletes.

"We are aware that problems did occur in the past, but we have faced them and made changes and are accepting the consequences from the NCAA. Well before we even started the appeals process, we began implementing new processes to help all of our student-athletes have more success in the classroom."

The Panthers will not be eligible to participate in the Horizon League tournament or any other postseason tournament during the 2014-15 season. UW-Milwaukee recently won the Horizon League tournament to earn a NCAA Tournament bid.
