Ice damages docks at Sheboygan marina

Posted: Updated:
SHEBOYGAN (WKOW) --  The long, cold winter was especially hard on the Harbor Center Marina in Sheboygan.

The ice at the entrance to Lake Michigan was twice as thick as a normal year.

And, as it froze, thawed and refroze, the ice pack caused about $350,000 in damage to the docks.

Repairs have put the marina about two weeks behind on docking boats.

But, just 30 miles north, the Manitowoc marina has no damage, thanks to what's called a log boom; the floating logs block the waves and prevent ice damage.

Sheboygan officials say log booms don't work because of how their marina is positioned on the lake.
