Group aims to expand the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Chippewa Falls

Chippewa Falls WQOW) - A little more than a year after its grand opening, an area veteran's home is out of space and the waiting list is nearly as big as the home itself.

The Wisconsin Veterans Home in Chippewa Falls opened in January of 2013 with 72 beds. Today, all of them are occupied and there are 65 people on the waiting list. Originally the plan called for more beds but the larger home plan wasn't approved.

Now, an independent group made up of veterans and supporters is spearheading a movement to expand and add an additional 72 beds.

"We need to show that the Chippewa Valley, Chippewa Falls, can indeed handle and deserves another addition to that veteran's home. Would it be a new building? Would it be connected by tunnels? Would it just be additional wings? We don't know," Dave Zien of VFW Post 305 says.

The group plans to start lobbying lawmakers to convince the state the project is needed. They hope to see it funded by 2017.
