McEvoy makes big plays in Badgers annual Spring Game

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) - In front of a crowd of 8,204, Tanner McEvoy was able to show how much progress he'd made at the quarterback position, since switching back from safety. In a game that featured a majority of run plays, McEvoy didn't exactly wow from a completion standpoint, he was 4/10, but all the big plays of the game happened with McEvoy on the field. In the first half, McEvoy hit Kenzel Doe in stride for a 27 yard touchdown. McEvoy also ran for a score, showing the versatility he can bring to the quarterback position.

It was a big opportunity for McEvoy to make another push at the starting quarterback position, since losing the job to Joel Stave last August. With Stave out nursing a shoulder injury, McEvoy got plenty of work with the first team and he was able to impress his coach.

"He had a nice day today, coach Gary Andersen said of McEvoy. "He threw the ball well. He showed you what he can do with his feet."

Bart Houston and true freshman D.J. Gillins also got time under center, but Andersen said he's ready to move ahead with McEvoy and Stave getting the majority of the reps come fall camp.

:"He walks up to the huddle, he looks more comfortable, and I think the football team is more comfortable around him," Andersen said.

"We'll just keep moving down the lines, and those two kids are going to get most of the reps in the fall, those two being Tanner and obviously Joel."
