14th annual Ragtime Spring Concert features young pianist

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A spring concert continues the legacy of ragtime music in Eau Claire.

The Chippewa Valley Ragtime Society hosted its 14th annual spring concert at First Congregational Church. This year's concert featured a 13-year-old from Illinois who was named the junior world champion in a 2012 old time piano playing contest. Daniel Souvigny, the event's special guest and pianist, said, "I love the place, I love the music, I love the piano, so, here I am."

Jim Radloff, the founder of the Chippewa Valley Ragtime Society said, "I think the beauty is that it opens up an era of historic American music to the public locally in the region that they would not likely otherwise hear other than on YouTube recordings or if they went to a ragtime festival."

Earlier this year, the Eau Claire's very last ragtime festival was held.  Organizers had been trying to recruit new members to take over but were not successful. The event had been running for 15 years. The ragtime society says it still plans to host concerts, like this year's, from time to time.
