Practices move indoors as spring sports struggle with weather

Altoona (WQOW) - The outdoor spring sports season is well underway, but it's hard to tell.

Teams have been stuck indoors again because of weather like we had Monday.

This was also a problem last year. High school teams are trying to adjust, but there's only so much you can do when old man winter doesn't play fair.

"It's hard to simulate fly balls in a gym," said Jay Johnson, Altoona High School Baseball Head Coach.

Baseball players at Altoona have been stuck fielding off a flat surface this spring.

"On a gym floor, everything's a true hop. We have a grass infield on our field, and we need to get outside and start taking live reps off that grass infield," Johnson added.

Its just one of several issues the team has faced since the sport started several weeks ago.

"We're up to three games right now that we've canceled. Hopefully it isn't like last year. Last year we ended up losing eleven games that we just never made up. We had ten seniors on our team, and they just lost those games there," Johnson said.

In Elk Mound, the softball squad has held practices in the elementary school gymnasium. That's made it hard to keep things moving.

"We only have one batting cage we get to use as a softball team. So trying to rotate girls through and get them all the reps they need. It's quite difficult to plan a practice," said Dylan Pronschinske, Elk Mound High School Softball Head Coach

And when it comes to games, they've battled back against weekend snowstorms earlier this year.

"We spent our entire practice that Monday, shoveled all the outfield. We got some good weather that Tuesday and Wednesday and were able to get it to dry out and we were able to play Thursday and Friday here at home."

Those were the only games the team has been able to play.

"No one the way the weather has been this year really has a home field advantage," said Johnson.

Elk Mound had originally scheduled baseball and softball games Monday night at Elmwood. However, both games were postponed because of the cold weather. They have been rescheduled for next Monday.
