Rent scam targeting college students in Madison

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- A new scam appears to be targeting college students that rent in Madison, according to police.

The Madison Police Department says a single sheet of paper, advising the current resident of a newly created "online rent system", is being place underneath the renter's door. It tells the renter that all interested parties should contact a listed manager's email with specific information, like name, date of birth, social security number, and credit card information.

The flier even offers the renters a $215 credit off next month's rent for signing up for the program.

The email asks for suggestions to make the online payment process easier for the resident, and notes a company name of H&H Apartments; located at 7473 Ellington Court in Middleton.

Madison Police remind everyone to never give this type of information to any individual(s) via email or phone. Authorities say this can put you in a vulnerable position financially. They say individuals should deal directly with the institutions for which they have financial arrangements with, and make sure they keep confidential information protected at all times.
