Man accused in Eau Claire hostage situation charged with 9 felonies
Eau Claire (WQOW) - Police say the man accused of holding an Eau Claire family hostage last month, said he had been up for four straight days while using meth.
James Albrecht was charged this week with nine felonies, including taking hostages.
Police were chasing Albrecht after he allegedly drove off without paying for gas at a convenience store. Albrecht allegedly ran to an apartment on Hidden Place and knocked on the door, then walked inside. Police say Albrecht was armed with a handgun and held a family of two adults and three children hostage. One of the residents was able to use toothpaste to write messages on a window to police. The messages included "has gun" and "three kids." One of the women in the apartment said she tried anything she could to get Albrecht away from the children, including offering to drive him out of the area. Police say during the standoff, Albrecht released two of the children in return for cigarettes.
Seven hours after the incident began, Albrecht gave himself up. He remains in jail and returns to court next month.
