Data breach impacts nearly 3 million Michaels customers

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- There's been another major data breach at a retail chain.

Michaels stores says a data breach at its craft locations in the U.S. may have impacted up to 2.6 million credit and debit cards.

Seventeen stores are listed in Wisconsin as exposed to the breach, including the one here in Madison, along with locations in Janesville and Middleton. CLICK HERE to see all of the impacted locations.

Elliot Christianson, co-founder of Green Bay Net says, "What typically happens with security problems, like airport security, we're fighting yesterday's battles. Like, we're not going to see another shoe bomber but we check everybody's shoes."

The company says the incident has been "contained."

If you think your information has been compromised, you should contact your bank or credit card company.

Michaels is also offering free identity protection and credit monitoring services to affected customers.
