Area middle school students perform Shakespeare for annual festival

Eau Claire (WQOW) -
Near the anniversary of his death, area middle school students give props to William Shakespeare.

Students from Delong, South and Northstar Middle Schools came to Memorial High School for the area's tenth annual Shakespeare Festival.   Classics like Romeo and Juliet and Taming of the Shrew were performed as well as some more modern pieces, like Star Wars Shakespeare.

"They were talking like C3PO but they were saying Shakesperean words. So, it's kind of interesting when you mix Shakespearean language with modern movies and TV shows," Paula Tracy of Northstar Middle School says.

Teachers say students learn valuable skills by memorizing and performing the skits. One of them being a better understanding of the language Shakespeare himself helped write, he is credited with inventing nearly 1,700 words.
