MG's Cruz twins help team cruise to early success

Posted: Updated:
MADISON, WI (WKOW) --  It's been more than ten years since the Monona Grove girls soccer team won their last state title. But sophomore twins Savannah and Sienna Cruz have the team cruising to early success, opening the season with a 5-1 record, including a win over last year's Division 2 runner-up, Mount Horeb.

"We play so well together and we move so well together because we know how each other plays," said Sienna.

The most difficult challenge is telling them apart.

"This year, I'm pretty good at it actually," said head coach Erin Flesch. "There's something about their eyes that's a little bit different. Most of their teammates cannot tell them apart."

The twin-engines have accounted for most of the offensive fire-power this season, forward Savannah leading the way with seven goals already.

"They'll tell you, too, if one of them is sitting out, she's not as big of an impact player as if her sister was in there with her," said Flesch. "They're just such a dynamic duo, to have both of them in there at the same time is the best possible scenario for us."

Both Savannah and Sienna are coming off first-team all-conference seasons last year as freshmen.

"Their skill level is so high that it really makes players around them work hard," said Flesch.

Savannah and Sienna say being twins brings out a competitiveness in both of them that had made the dynamic duo so effective.

"In practice, if we go one versus one with other players, I'll go hard," said Savannah. "But if it's one versus one against Sienna, I have to win."
