Ex-UW River Falls coach responds after being disciplined

Posted: Updated:
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The former head coach of a Wisconsin school placed on probation for a year by the NCAA said he should have been more cautious after the organization made changes to rules about distribution of financial aid.

The NCAA said Wednesday that Division III Wisconsin-River Falls failed to monitor the scholarship process. The school has said the self-reported violations were unintentional.

John O'Grady was River Falls coach at the time. He wrote in an email Thursday that he made decisions on small amounts of money initially issued by the alumni office to be given to deserving student-coaches.

O'Grady said there should have been more caution when rules changed and the financial aid office oversaw distribution of money. O'Grady is now an assistant at Wisconsin-Whitewater.
