Scrabble Bee brings big crowd and big money

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Scrabble is a game usually enjoyed around the dining room table with family, but tonight at 29 pines in Eau Claire almost 400 people sat down for some scrabble all to raise money for a local non-profit that helps people master letters and words.

"This year we have somewhere between 300 and 400 people playing on 36 teams," said organizer Mary Jo Van Gompel from the Chippewa Valley Literacy Volunteers.

The goal for every team was the same, score a lot of points.

"You've got to think fast and you've got to have a few key words that you know bring big points, like quixotic and quizmaster," said Ellen Terwilliger of the Mayo Clinic word nerd team.

"I'm amazed at how competitive the teams are," Van Gompel said. "They're all standing, and talking to each other, so it is very competitive."

Even with the competitive spirit in full force tonight raising money for a good cause is what the night is all about.

"It's just the enthusiasm and all the energy is the room is pretty amazing," said Van Gompel.

The scrabble bee is a fundraiser for the literacy volunteers of the Chippewa Valley.

News 18's own Jerry GGallagherwas tonight's emcee.

Organizers hope the event brings in 40-thousand dollars.
